My friends and I recently started a book club and today was our first meeting. I offered to host it since I wanted to have a holiday gathering too. I need to show off my beautiful Christmas tree! My original idea was to make gingerbread houses but it turned into too much work so instead we decorated sugar cookies.

Martha Stewart‘s Basic Sugar Cookies


4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature

2 cup granulated sugar

2 large egg

2 teaspoon vanilla extract


With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy about 3-4 minutes. While this is mixing, in large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat eggs and vanilla into butter and sugar. With mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture; beat until combined. Divide dough in half; flatten into disks. Wrap each in plastic and chill at least 1 hour up to 1 day.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment. Remove one dough disk; let stand 5 to 10 minutes. Roll out 1/8 inch thick, dusting dough with flour as needed.

Rolled Dough

Cut shapes with cookie cutters. Decorate with colored sugar and other things. You can also bake and decorate with royal icing after they are cooled. Transfer to prepared baking sheets. Reroll scraps and repeat with remaining dough. Chill if dough becomes too soft.


Bake, rotating halfway through, until edges are golden, 10 to 18 minutes (depending on size). Cool on wire racks and enjoy your creations!
