About

Judging the Vendys!

Welcome to Made From Scratch from my little Brooklyn kitchen. I often find myself having conversations about the food I cook and eat. Two people in one week asked me if I ever thought about starting a blog so I knew it was time to share (or shut up about cooking!). My approach to food as you may expect is made from scratch. I was fortunate to grow up with a mother who was a great cook and taught me her skills. In college I taught my roommate how to cook, had weekly dinner parties with friends and baked for late nights in the studio. I think the real turning point though, was when I discovered homemade ricotta. After I realized I could make cheese it opened up a whole new world for me!

For the past year I’ve been a member of a CSA, which has really changed how I cook. I now cook mostly local, seasonal vegetables. It has forced me to be creative with what I cook and try new things. It’s fun!

Some things I’ve been involved in…

I was the citizen judge at the 2010 Vendy Awards.

I was featured on the Downtown edition of Midtown Lunch.

I was interviewed about food trucks for Appetite for Life with Andrew Zimmern.

  1. Hello! I’m a reader from Singapore! I’m 18 this year and I have planned to bake a Rainbow Cake for the coming Christmas! May I ask if it’s alright to use whip cream instead of Lemony Meringue Buttercream to combine the coloured cakes together? I look forward to your reply and hope that you’ll reply me as soon as possible, as Christmas is around the corner! Thank you for your kind attention and Merry Christmas! ^^

    • I worry about the stability of the whipped cream. It may start melting and the layers could slide. If you frost it right before serving it should be ok. You may need to stabilize the layers with bamboo skewers. Good luck!

  2. Made from scratch is a great philosophy, it’s really fun to learn what actually goes into food – I’m a big fan of making as much as I can from scratch. Your blog is fantastic.
